Originally published as a three-part series of articles, the contents of Principles of Liberty also are presented in one online article and a in a reproducible PDF file. The material has further been expanded into a historical study and in-depth Bible study titled Principles of Liberty: Ten Biblical Truths Embedded in the Declaration of Independence. Here is an outline of the study. As Americans, we cannot effectively defend and preserve liberty if we don’t become familiar with our nation’s history and heritage.

Disclaimers: The articles and Bible studies on socialism and capitalism are designed to provide big-picture perspectives on both systems in light of clear biblical principles. This means that certain details that merit further study are not explored in this material. For example, even though I acknowledge capitalism isn’t a perfect system, I don’t consider specific ways in which it can be abused but do contend the solution is to correct the abuses, not to replace free enterprise with socialism. Socialism, in contrast to private enterprise, stands inherently contrary to Scripture. On a related matter, some see the free market system as lacking guidelines that help people remain honest; we should not be surprised that a secular perspective of capitalism would do this. By contrast, a biblical view of free enterprise includes guidelines for fair and honest trade, because God gives these in His Word. Accordingly, I describe free enterprise as a system that encourages honesty and integrity — even though some participants in the free market clearly do act selfishly and dishonestly. The point here is that by design, the material offers a broad, general overview of each system in light of biblical principles. Understanding socialism and capitalism in this context is a great first step in comprehending just how compatible capitalism is with Scripture, and how strongly socialism opposes it.

You’ll find as well a strong emphasis on property rights in our discussions on liberty and freedom. Of course, liberty depends on other elements in addition to property rights, and I acknowledge this; but I still call property rights “linchpin issues.” Significantly, it is very telling how strongly and how often America’s Founding Fathers and early influencers emphasized property rights in their discussions of liberty. Here are some examples, and here is a thorough discussion of their views on the matter. I would point out as well that Karl Marx clearly understood the connection between private property rights and personal freedom. Finally, while Scripture condemns materialism, it also indicates that much satisfaction and fulfillment can come from owning and using wisely the resources God has blessed one with and put in his charge. This is Christian stewardship, and authentic liberty protects one’s right to practice it. Here are several relevant Scripture passages.
