Clarence Shuler: Another thing we’re talking about in the book is from 1 Corinthians 12, and I just want to reiterate this: the whole idea that we need to serve each other. When we have these political views that we, or these verbal wars, then I’m really saying, My way’s more important than yours. And really in some sense, My view is really more important than even developing a relationship with you because you’re wrong and I’m right. And [so] our faith now becomes our god [and] becomes our politics, and God never calls us to do that.
But if we understand interdependency, that, here’s the deal: I need you in my life, and hopefully you need me, if we’re brothers in Christ. OK? And if we don’t, then we miss out on a glimpse of God I could never see without you.
You know, I’m reading this Africa Study Bible. It’s not because it’s black, but it’s a different culture. And as I read the Bible from their perspective I’m seeing a different glimpse of God, and I think that’s what God wants us to see. We can’t see Him, I think, the way He wants us to see [Him] if we’re staying divided.
So we lose out on this God we say we love if we can’t understand or [make] some attempts to do these cross-cultural friendships. But that requires humility and not pride.
