Jeff Wright: Gary, what are the core elements of having this kind of friendship emerge, and how do you think it’s going to change the country?
Gary Chapman: Well, you know, I think it starts with common courtesy. You know, the word courtesy comes from two Greek words. One of them means the mind, and the other means friend. So [it means] “to be friendly minded.” It’s to treat people as though they were a friend.
You know, if you are in your car, you pull into a parking lot and it’s pretty full, and you’re looking for an empty space, and you see it, what are you going to do? You’re going to go for it! But if you see another car coming around the corner, and you recognize, Oh, that’s a friend of mine! What do you do? You let them have the place. Well, what if we treated everyone we encountered as if they were a friend? That opens up the possibility that we could become a friend. So I think it all starts with that attitude.
